Spring Series: Five Cultures Introduction I used two criteria to select the films for this series: excellence and diversity. Each film is thematically-universal but culturally specific. Each is excellent by its own unique set of standards, and the standards--the cinematic valules-- are somewhat different for each. I hope you enjoy the series and contribute to this discussion forum. Wild Strawberries - August 3 Ingmar Bergman, Sweden, 1957, NR 91 minutes Cast: Victor Sjöstrom, Bibi Andersson, Ingrid Thulin, Gunnar Bjornstrand The film that catapulted Ingmar Berman to the forefront of world cinema, Wild Strawberries is an extraordinary portrait of an old professor (played, indelibly, by the great director Victor Sjöstrom) looking back at his life. Though the film has served as an inspiration for countless movies, it remains as fresh and modern as the day it came out. "The driving force in Wild Strawberries is...a desperate attempt to justify myself to mythologically oversized parents," says Bergman. Beauty and the Beast -- August 17 (France, 1946, in French with subtitles) NR 96 minutes Directed by Jean Cocteau Cast: Jean Marais, Josette Day Beauty and the Beast (La Belle et la Bête) is a landmark feat of cinematic fantasy in which master filmmaker Jean Cocteau conjures spectacular visions of enchantment, desire and death that have never been equaled. This adaptation of Leprince de Beaumont's immortal tale features Josette Day as Belle and Jean Marais (under layers of glorious make-up) as the wild but gentle-hearted beast. |

Rashomon -- August 24 (Japan, 1950, in Japanese with subtitles) NR 88 minutes Directed by Akira Kurosawa Cast: Toshiro Mifune, Michiko Kyo, Takashi Shimura Perhaps the finest film ever to investigate the philosophy of justice, Rashomon introduced director Akira Kurosawa and Japanese cinema to the world. Set in 11th-century Japan, the film reveals the complexities of human nature as four people recount different versions of the story of a man’s murder and the rape of his wife. Kurosawa’s visionary approach would have enormous influence as he bequeathed to world cinema the striking narrative device of multiple, conflicting flashbacks of a key event. |

Viridiana -- August 31 (Mexico/Spain, 1961, in Spanish with subtitles) NR 90 minutes Directed by Luis Bunuel. Cast: Silvia Pinal, Fernando Rey, Francisco Rabal After 30 years in Mexican exile, Luis Buñuel triumphantly (and perversely) returned to Spanish filmmaking with this irreverent vision of life as a beggar’s banquet. In Viridiana, a novice nun (Sylvia Pinal) does her utmost to maintain her Catholic principles, but her lecherous uncle and a motley assemblage of paupers force her to confront the limits of her idealism. Winner of the Palme d’Or at the 1961 Cannes Film Festival, Viridiana is as audacious today as ever. |

La Strada -- September 7 (Italy, 1954, in Italian with subtitles) NR 108 minutes Directed by Federico Fellini Cast: Anthony Quinn, Giulietta Masina, Richard Basehart La Strada tells the story of Gelsomina, a young girl sold by her impoverished mother to carnival strong man Zampanò. Physically and emotionally cruel, Zampanò trains Gelsomina as his sidekick. Despite his fits of rage and violence, she retains a child-like optimism. In a small town they encounter The Fool, a a high-wire artist who teaches Gelsomina that there might be more to life than her servitude to Zampanò. According to film critic Roger Ebert, “La Strada is the first film that can be called entirely ‘Felliniesque.’” |
