In collaboration with HT2FF (Hamptons Take 2 Film Festival) and in conjunction with the current exhibition, From Lens to Eye to Hand: Photorealism 1969 to Today.

1. Hamptons Drive-In, 1972, NR, 30 minutes.

2. Camera and Mirror—Painting Through the Lens: Howard Kanovitz, 2007, NR, 28 minutes.

Enjoy a screening of two films by director Lana Jokel—a long-time friend of painter Howard Kanovitz (1929-2009). Camera and Mirror is a rare look into Kanovitz during the period when his work evolved from abstract expressionism to photorealism. Hamptons Drive-In, featuring rich archival footage of the Hamptons, documents the making of Kanovitz's iconic painting by the same name. This work, as well as a series of lithographs by Kanovitz, are part of the Museum’s permanent collection.

The screening will be followed by a conversation with Lana Jokel, her collaborator Rainer Gross who worked with Kanovitz from 1971-74, and Kanovitz's widow, Carolyn Oldenbusch, moderated by Terrie Sultan.

Lana Jokel is known for her documentaries on important artists including Robert Motherwell, Lee Krasner, Claes Oldenburg, Andy Warhol, and Larry Rivers. She began her career working for documentarians Richard Leacock and D.A. Pennebaker. Jokel subsequently edited Norman Mailer’s films—Beyond the Law and Maidstone—as well as two feature-length films produced by Andy Warhol and directed by Paul Morrissey, Heat and L’Amour. In 2013 Jokel received the Filmmaker’s Choice Award from the Hamptons Take 2 Documentary Film Festival.

Ticket includes Museum admission.

Friday Nights are made possible, in part, by the generous support of The Corcoran Group, Bridgehampton National Bank, and Sandy and Stephen Perlbinder.
